🏆 What Happened This Week
🏈 Football Is Officially Back
I know, I know. It’s only preseason.
But after months without NFL football, I will absolutely be pretending this is the start of fall.
The NFL preseason officially kicked off Thursday night with the Carolina Panthers beating the Arizona Cardinals 33–30 in the Hall of Fame Game. And the Panthers didn’t exactly ease us back into football—they won on a last-second touchdown from quarterback Haynes King.
Quick preseason explanation: these games don’t count toward the regular-season record. Teams use them to test out players, figure out who deserves a spot on the final roster, and work out the kinks before the games actually start counting.
So no, we are not planning the Panthers’ Super Bowl parade yet.
But a win is a win. Keep Pounding.
🐐 From Carolina to Canton
If you were a Panthers fan in the 2010s, you definitely know Luke Kuechly. If you weren’t, here’s what you need to know: he was one of the best defensive players in football.
Kuechly spent his entire eight-year NFL career with the Panthers as a linebacker—basically, one of the guys whose job is to stop the other team from moving the ball down the field.
And he was really good at it.
He was named the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year his first season, Defensive Player of the Year the next, and was selected to the Pro Bowl seven times—basically the NFL’s way of recognizing the best players at each position.
Now, he’s getting one of the biggest honors you can get in football: a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
He’ll officially be inducted this Saturday, and the Panthers have been celebrating him all week. Players even showed up to Thursday’s game wearing his iconic No. 59 jersey.
Eight seasons. One team. And now, forever a Hall of Famer.
Very Carolina. Very deserved.
⚾ Baseball Just Got Serious
Baseball is officially entering the part of the season that actually matters. The trade deadline just passed, which was teams’ last big chance to add players before making a run at the playoffs.
Basically, teams have picked a lane: go all-in for a championship or start planning for next year. Now the playoff race heats up, and every game starts to matter a little more.
🎾 Tennis Is Getting Ready for Its Biggest U.S. Event
The U.S. Open starts later this month, so the tennis world is officially gearing up for one of the biggest tournaments of the year.
Right now, players are competing in tournaments like the Cincinnati Open, which gives us a good idea of who’s playing well heading into New York.
One name to watch: Carlos Alcaraz, one of the biggest stars in men’s tennis. He pulled out of Cincinnati because of a wrist injury, which matters because the U.S. Open is only a few weeks away.
You don’t need to know his entire résumé. Just know this: if Alcaraz isn’t 100%, one of the biggest tennis tournaments of the year suddenly gets a lot more interesting.

🎾 Cincinnati Open - August 11 - August 23, 2026
You don’t need to become a tennis person overnight. Just know this is one of the big tournaments players use to prepare for the U.S. Open later this month—and a good chance to learn a few names before everyone starts talking about tennis again.
🚨 Chaos Headlines
🏈 The Panthers won with basically no time left. Haynes King ran in the game-winning touchdown to give Carolina a 33–30 preseason win. Yes, preseason football already has drama.
🏆 Luke Kuechly gets his gold jacket. The former Panthers linebacker will officially become a Pro Football Hall of Famer this weekend.
🎾 Carlos Alcaraz is dealing with a wrist injury. With the U.S. Open coming up later this month, his health is officially something to keep an eye on.
⚾ Baseball’s playoff race is heating up. We’re entering the part of the season where teams are fighting for postseason spots and every loss starts to hurt a little more.
🛋️ Fi’s Couch Report
I’ll admit it: there is something about football being back that just feels right.
Yes, it’s preseason. Yes, these games technically don’t count. And yes, I will still get way too invested in a Panthers game in August.
But between Carolina winning on a last-second touchdown and Luke Kuechly heading into the Hall of Fame, Panthers fans got a pretty great welcome back to football this week.
Do I suddenly have unreasonable expectations for the season? Ask me again in September.
For now, I’m enjoying the win.
Keep Pounding.
🤯 Sports Fun Fact
Since this is basically the Luke Kuechly appreciation edition…
Kuechly recorded 100+ tackles in all eight seasons of his NFL career.
And he retired at just 28 years old.
Eight seasons. Seven Pro Bowls. Defensive Player of the Year. Hall of Fame.
Talk about making your time count.
💬 One Thing to Bring Up This Week
“Luke Kuechly retired at only 28 and still did enough in eight seasons to make the Hall of Fame. That’s kind of insane.”
💭 Fi’s Final Thoughts
There is something about hearing football commentary on TV again that immediately makes it feel like fall is around the corner—even though it is still approximately 400 degrees outside.
The World Cup may be over, but sports have officially handed the baton to football season. The Panthers started us off with a win, Luke Kuechly is heading into the Hall of Fame, and the NFL preseason is underway.
Next stop: games that actually count.
Now you know. 💚
