⚽ What Happened This Week
Spain is headed to the World Cup Final.
Spain secured its place in the final with a convincing 2–0 win over France. Mikel Oyarzabal opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Pedro Porro doubled the lead in the second half.
France entered the game as one of the tournament favorites, but Spain controlled the matchup and never allowed its biggest stars to find their rhythm. Spain is now heading to only its second World Cup Final—and its first since winning the tournament in 2010.
Argentina breaks England’s heart—again.
England looked like it was finally heading back to the World Cup Final after Anthony Gordon gave the team a 1–0 lead early in the second half.
Then the defending champions did what defending champions do.
Enzo Fernández tied the game in the 85th minute, and Lautaro Martínez scored the winner in stoppage time after an assist from Lionel Messi. Argentina’s dramatic 2–1 comeback sent the reigning champions back to the final and ended England’s hopes of winning its first World Cup since 1966.
📺 What to Watch This Week
🥉 France vs. England — Third-Place Match
Saturday, July 18 at 5:00 PM ET
It may not be the final either team wanted, but both sides have one last opportunity to finish the tournament with a win.

🏆 Spain vs. Argentina — World Cup Final
Sunday, July 19 at 3:00 PM ET
This is it. The biggest game in soccer.
Spain is trying to win its second World Cup, while Argentina is attempting to become the first country since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back men’s World Cups. Argentina is also one win away from successfully defending the title it won in 2022.
It’s Spain’s young, controlled, team-first style against Argentina’s experience, resilience, and late-game magic.
Pick a side and clear your Sunday afternoon.
🌎 World Cup Chaos Headlines
⚽ Spain shut down France. France had some of the biggest attacking names left in the tournament, but Spain never allowed the team to settle into the game.
⚽ Pedro Porro picked the perfect time to shine. He scored Spain’s second goal and was named Player of the Match in the semifinal.
⏰ Argentina scored twice in the final minutes. England was leading with only five minutes of regulation remaining—and still didn’t make it to the final.
🐐 Messi is one win away from another World Cup. He didn’t score against England, but his stoppage-time assist helped create the goal that sent Argentina through.
💔 England’s wait continues. The country has not won the men’s World Cup since 1966, and another promising tournament run ended in heartbreak.
🏆 The final is officially set. Spain and Argentina will meet on Sunday in New Jersey with the World Cup trophy on the line.
🛋️ Fi’s Couch Report
England looked like it had one foot in the World Cup Final after taking a 1–0 lead. But instead of continuing to attack, the team did what soccer fans call “parking the bus.”
No, there wasn’t an actual bus involved.
Parking the bus is when a team drops almost everyone back on defense and focuses entirely on protecting its lead instead of trying to score again. England seemed comfortable sitting on that one-goal advantage and hoping it could survive until the final whistle.
Against some teams, that strategy might work—cough, cough, Mexico. 👀
But against the defending World Cup champions? That is a dangerous game to play.
England invited Argentina to keep attacking, and Argentina eventually made it pay. Two late goals completely flipped the game and sent England home.
England tried to build a Wonderwall around its goal—but Argentina found a way through it anyway.
Turns out, Argentina was the one that was gonna save the day.
🤯 Sports Fun Fact
Argentina is trying to become only the third country to win back-to-back men’s World Cups.
Italy did it in 1934 and 1938, and Brazil did it in 1958 and 1962. No country has managed it since.
💬 One Thing to Bring Up This Week
“England was winning with five minutes left, but Argentina scored twice at the end and completely stole the game.”
💭 Fi’s Final Thoughts
